Programs based at German universities generally follow the university calendar with an intensive language session followed by winter semester (October-March), summer semester (April-July). The IES programs in Berlin and Freiburg do offer a Fall semester (Sept-Dec) option. See Austria listings for additional options.

Advanced Track. Attractive university city of 350,000; fewer Americans and tourists than in Paris or Aix; program and university courses; close to the Mediterranean. 3 1/2 hours from Paris by fast train. Early application.

France

Opportunities range from programs with separate courses, with a mix of program and university courses or, for more advanced students, with direct enrollment in university courses. Smaller provincial student-centered cities offer good experiences away from Paris. There are also opportunities also in Madagascar and Senegal; however, French is usually a "second language" in these countries.

Varied course selection, including architecture, clinical biology, child development, European studies, public health, environmental studies. Core courses in Business, Communication, Management, Entrepreneurship not approved. Program study tours. Must take Danish language. 3.0 gpa required for admission. No credit for optional study tours. Students are encouraged to apply for DIS scholarships.
Two housing options: Homestay and Kollegium with Shared Kitchen. Homestay is the best ways to meet Danes. Bates approves only the Kollegium with Shared Kitchen option (not the private kitchen or apartment options). Commutes to housing can be more than 1 hour each way.
Large program with many Bates students; students seeking greater distance from Bates may wish to consider universities in the UK and Ireland, Maastricht University in The Netherlands, or programs such as the IES program in Amsterdam, or the College Year in Athens program.

Special Opportunities:

AVC Pre-Arch: Core courses in: architecture; interior architecture; urban design. Previous coursework in Studio Art/Art History and Drawing required.

Psychology & Child Development: Positive Psychology; Child Diversity and Development.

Music: Composition and Performance at Royal Danish Academy; admission difficult.

Economics Opportunity to receive 300 or 200-level credit

Neuroscience: Psychopharmacology.
