Cook, New Zealand (Molly Ladd &#8217;08)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>       <p align=\"left\">In the pages that follow, information is provided on over  200 opportunities for junior semester and junior year abroad study.&nbsp; The Fall Semester program is designed and taught by Bates faculty.&nbsp; The other opportunities are organized by special academic opportunity and then by geographic region.&nbsp; Each entry is linked to its sponsor&#8217;s web site where more detailed information            is available.&nbsp;            Brochures and student evaluations for most programs are available in the Off-Campus Study Library. All the information is, of course, subject to change.&nbsp; These pages            are intended exclusively for use by the students, faculty, and staff            of Bates College.<\/p>             <p>Students are urged to supplement this online information with:<\/p><ul>         <li>Discussions with faculty, Mr. Das and Dean Sawyer,<\/li>         <li>Evaluations and other materials on file in the off-campus study library            in Lane Hall, and<\/li>         <li>Discussions with the Bates faculty, juniors and seniors who have            participated on the programs. (These individuals are listed for            each program.)&nbsp;<\/li>        <\/ul><p>Background information, including safety and health information, is available        on the <a href=\"http:\/\/abacus.bates.edu\/acad\/offcampusstudy\/predepartureplanning.html\">Pre-Departure Planning<\/a> web page.&nbsp; The <a href=\"http:\/\/travel.state.gov\/\">U.S.         State Department, Bureau of Consular Affairs<\/a> web site provides the         latest        &quot;Consular Information Sheets,&quot; &quot;Travel Advisories,&quot; and &quot;Travel Warnings.&quot;&nbsp;        The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/travel\/\">U.S. Centers for Disease Control        and Prevention<\/a> has a similarly informative site for health and immunization issues.<\/p>        <hr \/>               <p><strong>Bates Fall Semester Abroad Program<\/strong><\/p><p>These programs provide  excellent opportunities to develop a foreign         language skill and to study abroad with Bates faculty.&nbsp; In addition         to getting to know the faculty, it is an opportunity to study a theme         with them that can carry through to a major.&nbsp; Intensive language         instruction is a large part of each program. However, since there are         no prerequisites, one can initiate the study of a language, renew a high         school language, or study a language at a more advanced level.&nbsp; The         programs are unique in that all classes, including first-years and sophomores,           are welcome  to participate.&nbsp; The faculty leading the programs           conduct information  sessions during the year.<\/p><blockquote>           <p align=\"left\"><strong>Kunming, China <\/strong>Professors <a href=\"mailto:mmaurer@bates.edu\">Maurer-Fazio<\/a> (Economics) and <a href=\"mailto:pbaker@bates.edu\">Baker<\/a> (Biology) will lead this program. In addition to Chinese language, students will take three courses: &quot;The Economics of China&#8217;s Health Care System,&quot; &quot;Biology of World Health,&quot; and &quot;Traditional Chinese Medicine.&quot; There will be travel within China, including excursions to Beijing, Xi&#8217;an, and northwest Yunnan, and a one-week practicum in traditional medicine in Hanoi, Vietnam.<\/p>            <p align=\"left\"><strong>Vienna, Austria<\/strong> Professors <a href=\"mailto:cdecker@bates.edu\">Decker<\/a> (German) and <a href=\"mailto:dbrowne@bates.edu\">Browne<\/a> (Russian) will lead this program. In addition to German language, students will take two courses: &quot;Austria in the 20th Century&quot; and &quot;The Balkans in the 19th and 20th Centuries.&quot; There will be travel within Austria, including a week-long excursion to Graz, Innsbruck, and Salzburg, and travel to major cities in the Balkans.<\/p>            <p align=\"left\">&nbsp;<\/p>       <\/blockquote>       <hr \/> <h3>Additional Programs<\/h3>  <p><strong>Approval of participation, including completion of a Bates application, is required to receive credit for study on any of the programs or at any of the universities listed on the following web pages.
