Potential Off-Campus Study Programs

Near Mt. Cook, New Zealand (Molly Ladd ’08)

In the pages that follow, information is provided on over 200 opportunities for junior semester and junior year abroad study.  The Fall Semester program is designed and taught by Bates faculty.  The other opportunities are organized by special academic opportunity and then by geographic region.  Each entry is linked to its sponsor’s web site where more detailed information is available.  Brochures and student evaluations for most programs are available in the Off-Campus Study Library. All the information is, of course, subject to change.  These pages are intended exclusively for use by the students, faculty, and staff of Bates College.

Students are urged to supplement this online information with:

  • Discussions with faculty, Mr. Das and Dean Sawyer,
  • Evaluations and other materials on file in the off-campus study library in Lane Hall, and
  • Discussions with the Bates faculty, juniors and seniors who have participated on the programs. (These individuals are listed for each program.)

Background information, including safety and health information, is available on the Pre-Departure Planning web page.  The U.S. State Department, Bureau of Consular Affairs web site provides the latest "Consular Information Sheets," "Travel Advisories," and "Travel Warnings."  The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a similarly informative site for health and immunization issues.

Bates Fall Semester Abroad Program

These programs provide excellent opportunities to develop a foreign language skill and to study abroad with Bates faculty.  In addition to getting to know the faculty, it is an opportunity to study a theme with them that can carry through to a major.  Intensive language instruction is a large part of each program. However, since there are no prerequisites, one can initiate the study of a language, renew a high school language, or study a language at a more advanced level.  The programs are unique in that all classes, including first-years and sophomores, are welcome to participate.  The faculty leading the programs conduct information sessions during the year.

Kunming, China Professors Maurer-Fazio (Economics) and Baker (Biology) will lead this program. In addition to Chinese language, students will take three courses: "The Economics of China’s Health Care System," "Biology of World Health," and "Traditional Chinese Medicine." There will be travel within China, including excursions to Beijing, Xi’an, and northwest Yunnan, and a one-week practicum in traditional medicine in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Vienna, Austria Professors Decker (German) and Browne (Russian) will lead this program. In addition to German language, students will take two courses: "Austria in the 20th Century" and "The Balkans in the 19th and 20th Centuries." There will be travel within Austria, including a week-long excursion to Graz, Innsbruck, and Salzburg, and travel to major cities in the Balkans.
