NTI is a laboratory where you gain tangible tools while creating new work. From 9:00am to 10pm, seven days a week, you work with master teachers and create theater. This 14-week program trains you to function as a contributing member of an ensemble, invites you to find out what excites you about the art of theater, and gives you valuable skills to boldly apply that excitement and knowledge to your work. Conferring 20 credit hours, the NTI Semester is offered in the spring or fall semester.    

Spend the semester on a working ship! Unique opportunity to study biology, environmental studies, and/or marine biology while sailing in the Carribbean, around New Zealand, or on one of the many different voyages offered. Based in Woods Hole, CT but voyages focused on different academic topics and regions.

Advanced Spanish Track Required. Students with four or more semesters of college-level Spanish will be placed in an Advanced Spanish Immersion focus in which all courses are taught in Spanish. Advanced students also have the opportunity to participate in a no-cost, part-time internship and take courses at the University of Granada, one of Spain’s top-ranked and largest universities, and the most popular university for European students participating in the Erasmus student exchange program.

Focused, but excellent curriculum for students interested in African and Asian cultures and languages. International student body. Expensive city. Total enrollment: 5,200; number of Americans: 195. Consult the Course Catalog. Course selection: Spring–4 courses; Year-8 courses; at least half course load above the first year level.

Based at Center for Climate Studies in Patagonia. Set curriculum in climate change, geology, coastal and alpine ecology. Directed research project. Students are encouraged to apply for SFS scholarships.

Intensive language course and Internship. Based at National Taiwan University.

Choice of various academic program tracks and internship or research projects. Wolof or French language course.

Focus on Portuguese approach to sustainability and social equity. Academic excursions to the Azores and Spain. Independent study project. Students are encouraged to apply for SIT scholarships.

Semester Cinema is a biannual semester-long film intensive, offered alternate spring semesters, where 25 professionals mentor and collaborate with 40 students from multiple colleges to make an ambitious feature film for national and international release. Students attend a variety of classes, rooted in the liberal arts while fully participating in the deliberation and imagination of a screenplay from script to screen, and working in substantial roles under the guidance of experienced film and theater practitioners during production. Program includes 1 week at Sundance Film Festival, 11 weeks on Nantucket, 3 weeks at Northern Vermont University. Courses in cinema studies; screenwriting and directing; various craft workshops.

General Language and Area Studies curriculum; can also focus on: Early Childhood Education; Art History; Film & Media Studies. Bates requires home stay.

Core course on Poverty and Inequality; Portuguese language; 2 electives. Traveling seminar to Salvador da Bahia. Fall: Late July-late November; Spring: Feb-mid June.

For Biology and Environmental Studies majors only. Three tracks: Evolution and Ecology; Marine Ecology (PADI certification req); People and the Environment (requires 2 sems of Spanish). Month in Quito (at University of San Francisco); 3 months on San Cristobal island. Bates requires the Spanish language course.

Students live and study at research station. Tropical coast ecology; Environmental policy and socio-economic values; directed research. Spanish language experience helpful.

Major university located on border with Germany and Belgium. Students attend via the university’s Center for European Studies. Extensive curriculum in English; opportunities in the sciences; psychology, neuroscience. Courses with host country students.

Students live, eat and study at the Kilimanjaro Bush Camp in Southern Kenya. Wildlife ecology; human dimensions of ecology; directed research project. Best for students looking to focus on field work; less cultural immersion. Students are encouraged to apply for SFS scholarships.

Large, urban campus. Highly ranked university. Internships for credit available. Bates approves regular semester only (not Early Start/Early Depart). City of 5 million. Residential Colleges the best housing option. Total enr: 59,000.Course selection: “Unit”= U.S. course; search the Unit catalog. Course load = 4 units (24 points) per semester. “Sport and Learning in Australian Culture” is considered as a 100-level course. At least half the course load above the first year level.
